An Optimal Control System is desired when the traditional control system of the process does not utilize the full process potential. This often leads to waste of time and economic loss. The purpose of optimal control systems is to maximize process performance by considering all the physical advantages and constraints of the process. Often it is an advantage to design the optimal controller at the very beginning in order to avoid the above mentioned loss.

Fault Detection and Fault Control is desired when a supervision of the entire system, where faults are detected and isolated, is required.  Manual work is often necessary for isolating and detecting the faults when a system fails. Fault control compensates for faults by changing the control structure of the system so that process stop is prevented.
